How to write an artist’s statement for the BArtS October Open
For the very first time, BArtS is introducing the option to write a brief artist’s statement to display beside work entered into the October Open. Woo-hoo! This is a great opportunity for artists to write a statement that more deeply connects the audience to the work. A well-written artist’s statement (not one containing impenetrable art-speak, mind) can offer more information to the audience that helps them appreciate the work, the process, the feeling state of the artist, and more. (And hey, that can translate into sales, if that’s a goal for you.)
Here’s our handy-dandy guide for writing an artist’s statement for your entry. Bear in mind, the word limit is 25 words.
Write in the first person. (Use ‘I’ rather than writing about yourself by name.)

Choose just one thing you’d like to say, which will enhance the experience of the audience.
Here are some examples to give you a bit of a sense of what a 25 word artist’s statement might look like.
You could write about your feelings: ‘When I sculpted this work, I was going through a tricky time. The process was grounding and sustaining, and I feel grateful for that.’
You could write about the subject: ‘I walk the Braeside every day - it’s a spiritual place for me. This spot is where I stop for my cup of tea.’
You could write about the process: ‘I’ve struggled with still life in the past. Being in flow while I painted this has made the work sing more assuredly.’
‘This portrait of Hazel wasn’t easy to achieve - dogs aren’t good at following instructions to stay still. This made me work faster, and I love the result.’
You could write about the experience of making the work: ‘I felt nostalgic when I was making this piece. Using old photos, I reconnected with my past in ways that felt good.’
