ARTIST'S
STATEMENT
Landscape is
the main focus of John’s work, generally using a contemporary,
semi-abstract style in acrylics with some mixed media and collage. He
relishes trying to discover and portray fresh elements in what might
seem conventional scenes, and to extract something of the beauty and
power of places and objects often overlooked as ‘ordinary’ or
unpicturesque. An abiding interest has been the moods of the land and
the effects of human intervention on the landscape. The flat outback
with its salt lakes, bare hillocks, side horizons and derelict
settlements and mines has been a major feature of the work.
Recently, colourful collages (composed of acrylic-painted paper on
paper) have been a distinguishing mark of his style. These collages
bring together a variety of recollected images and aspects of a
landscape, creating a striking effect, at once different from one’s
normal perceptions and yet evoking clearly their origin. They have been
very popular and have featured regularly in exhibition award lists.
John’s paintings are represented in collections in Australia, New
Zealand, USA and the United Kingdom.
